How Long Should You Wear a Knee Splint?
For minor injuries, such as mild sprains or strains, a knee splint may be worn for approximately 3 to 7 days. During this time, the splint helps to stabilize the knee, reduce swelling, and alleviate pain. Healthcare professionals typically advise using a splint in conjunction with rest, ice, compression, and elevation—often referred to as the RICE method—to enhance healing.
In cases of moderate to severe injuries, or following surgical procedures, a knee splint may be required for a longer period, usually ranging from 2 to 6 weeks. For instance, if you have undergone knee surgery, your doctor may recommend the use of a splint for stability while the tissues heal and to prevent further injury.
As you begin to heal, your doctor may suggest gradually reducing the use of the knee splint. This may involve transitioning to other forms of support, such as physical therapy exercises, to regain strength and flexibility in the knee. Consistent monitoring and follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider are vital in determining when it's appropriate to stop using the knee splint altogether.
