What Helps Ankle Pain After Surgery?
There are several things that can help alleviate ankle pain after surgery:
- Painkillers: Prescription pain medications, such as opioids (e.g., oxycodone, hydrocodone) may be prescribed by the doctor for the initial days or weeks after surgery when the pain is most intense. These work by blocking pain signals in the brain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen can also be used to manage pain and reduce inflammation once the acute postoperative phase has passed. Over-the-counter options are available for milder pain, while stronger NSAIDs might be recommended by the doctor for more persistent discomfort.
- Strengthening Exercises: As the recovery progresses, exercises to strengthen the muscles around the ankle, such as the calf muscles and the muscles on the sides of the ankle, are introduced. This might involve heel raises, toe curls, or using resistance bands. Stronger muscles provide better support to the ankle joint, reducing the load on the surgical site and helping to relieve pain in the long run.
- Ankle Braces or Splints: Wearing an appropriate ankle support splint can offer support to the surgical site. It helps limit excessive movement that could cause pain or disrupt the healing process. Some ankle injury braces are adjustable and can be customized to the level of support needed as the ankle recovers. For example, a post-operative brace might be used initially to keep the ankle in a fixed position, and then a more flexible one can be used as mobility is gradually reintroduced.
- Rest and Elevation: Giving the ankle sufficient rest is essential for proper healing. Avoiding activities that put excessive strain on the ankle, such as prolonged standing or walking, allows the body's repair mechanisms to work effectively. Additionally, elevating the ankle above the heart level whenever possible, for example, by propping it up on a pillow while sitting or lying down, helps reduce swelling and associated pain.
By implementing these various approaches, patients can better manage ankle pain after surgery and support the overall recovery process.
