How to Tape an Ankle for Gymnastics

In gymnastics, the ankle is one of the most frequently injured areas of the body. Proper support can be crucial for preventing sprains and strains, especially for young athletes. Taping the ankle is a common practice among gymnasts to provide stability and protection during training and competitions. In this guide, we will explain how to tape an ankle effectively, particularly for youth gymnasts, while also discussing the benefits of using a youth ankle brace for gymnastics.

Materials Needed:

  1. Athletic tape (preferably 1.5 inches wide)
  2. Pre-tape, if desired (to prevent irritation)
  3. Scissors
  4. Optional: Elastic bandage or a pre-made ankle brace for additional support

Step-by-Step Guide to Taping an Ankle:

  • Preparation

Start by ensuring that the ankle is clean and dry. If the gymnast has hair around the ankle, consider shaving the area or using pre-tape to avoid irritation from the adhesive.

  • Apply Pre-tape

If using pre-tape, wrap it around the lower leg and ankle to create a smooth surface for the athletic tape. This also helps prevent skin irritation.

  • Start Taping

Begin by laying two anchor strips around the lower leg, approximately two to three inches above the ankle bone. These strips will secure the subsequent layers of tape.

  • Create a Stirrup

Take a piece of tape and anchor it on the outside of the lower leg. Pull it down around the outside of the ankle and up under the arch, finishing at the inside of the leg. This is known as a stirrup and helps stabilize the ankle.

  • Add Additional Strips

Continue adding tape strips in a figure-eight pattern, going around the heel and up over the ankle. Ensure that each piece overlaps slightly with the previous one for maximum support. Aim for at least three to four layers for a secure hold.

  • Final Anchors

Once the desired support is achieved, place additional anchor strips above and below the taped area to secure everything in place.

  • Check for Comfort

It’s essential to ensure that the tape is snug but not too tight. The gymnast should be able to move their toes and feel comfortable. If there’s excessive pressure, readjust the tape accordingly.

Benefits of Using a Youth Ankle Brace for Gymnastics:

While taping is a great support method, using a youth ankle brace for gymnastics can provide additional benefits. An ankle stabiliser brace offers consistent compression, which can help reduce swelling and provide more uniform support compared to tape. It is easy to put on and take off, making it a convenient option for young athletes. Ankle braces are reusable and can be a long-term investment in a gymnast's safety.

Taping an ankle is a valuable skill for gymnasts, especially when aiming to prevent injuries. Following the steps outlined above can help provide the necessary stability for young athletes. Combining taping with an ankle brace with straps for gymnastics can enhance support and protection, ensuring that gymnasts can perform their best while minimizing the risk of ankle injuries.
