How Do You Heal a Torn Tendon in Your Ankle?
Healing a torn tendon in the ankle usually involves a combination of the following steps:
- Ice Application: Apply ice to the ankle area for about 15-20 minutes several times a day (usually every 2-3 hours) during the initial 48 to 72 hours after the injury. Ice helps reduce swelling by constricting blood vessels and also alleviates pain. Wrap the ice pack in a thin towel to protect the skin from direct contact and potential ice burns.
- Compression: Use an elastic ankle bandage or a specialized compression ankle brace to wrap the ankle. This helps control swelling by limiting the accumulation of fluid in the tissues around the torn tendon. However, make sure not to wrap it too tightly to avoid interfering with blood circulation.
- Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or naproxen can be used to manage pain and reduce inflammation during the healing process. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe stronger medications if the pain is severe.
