What are the three types of orthosis?
Orthoses are devices used to support, align, or correct musculoskeletal issues. There are three main types of orthosis based on their function and the body part they support:
1. Static Orthosis
- Purpose: Provides support and stabilization without any movement. Static orthoses are designed to limit or restrict the movement of a joint or body part to allow healing.
- Example: A splint to immobilize a broken wrist or an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) that stabilizes the ankle in a fixed position after injury.
2. Dynamic Orthosis
- Purpose: Allows controlled movement to promote rehabilitation while still providing support. These orthoses are designed to assist with motion or limit excessive movement.
- Example: A dynamic ankle foot orthosis that allows for some ankle movement while providing support for walking.
3. Functional Orthosis
- Purpose: Aims to enhance movement or improve functionality by assisting in joint or limb movement. These are typically used for conditions where some degree of mobility is needed but the joint requires additional support.
- Example: A functional ankle foot orthosis (AFO) designed to assist with walking for individuals with foot drop or weakened ankle muscles.
Each type of orthosis is tailored to the individual’s needs, with ankle-foot orthosis types varying based on the specific condition being treated, such as stability support, movement assistance, or a combination of both.
